PORTFOLIO > LEVEL CHANGES & CLEAN LINES
This property is situated on chalkland with views over the South Downs. The clients recently refurbished the house to a high specification, using natural materials in a subtle combination of traditional and contemporary style.

The brief was to extend the outdoor living area in a manner which would complement the interior of the house and to provide pleasing contrasts with the old flint and brickwork of the exterior walls.

The Clients expressed their wish for a strong architectural design, clean simple lines, a classic colour palette and predominantly evergreen planting for year round interest. Use of the space for entertaining was a key concern, as was the need for manageable maintenance requirements.

Due to its position, high winds and strong sun meant that sheltered areas to sit and to eat would greatly enhance the use and enjoyment of the garden.

The east facing side of the house was transformed from a steeply sloping, unattractive and unusable grass bank into an elegant shaded seating/eating area on different levels, sheltered from the winds and directly accessible from both the dining room and the kitchen terrace.

Materials include oak decking to unite with the existing area outside the kitchen, lime-rendered walls and bespoke cut and sandblasted sandstone for the steps and copings which provides a clean, contemporary feel.

The planting has been planned around contrasts of foliage colour and texture with accents of flower colour throughout the year.

The design succeeds in harmonizing the inside and outside into a coherent whole and results in a satisfying and logical progression of space around the house.
