PORTFOLIO > AWARD WINNING COUNTRY GARDEN
This private garden occupies approximately 4 acres, with a further woodland area and paddocks. The brief was to redesign the tired and over-mature gardens to bring life and vitality to the site, and to provide an appropriate setting for the house without being ostentatious.

As the site is in the bottom of a natural valley, water is the dominant theme for the garden, the existing lake cleared of heavy conifers, a smaller natural pond installed, together with a more formal copper water feature viewed from within the house.

The design makes use of sweeping curves and natural landforms to introduce movement and interest, the hard landscaping kept simple to act as a foil for the large-scale drift planting of grasses and perennials.

Due to its sheltered location, half-hardy and tender exotics were used around the swimming pool terrace, beneath the shelter of a 2.5 metre high 'green wall' of sedum plants.

The woodland is being developed and regenerated over the longer term with the aim of encouraging wildlife through the creation of ideal habitat.

The garden was planted between December 2005 and May 2006. These images were taken in September 2007.

The garden received the Grand Award from BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) in 2007 – the first time that a private garden has won this prestigious award since 1997. Contractor - Hillier Landscapes
